Track season is here! What other way to find out more about our athletes than an interview! We had the chance to talk to athletes Devin Davis and Tyrone Buskey about track and field and what they love about it. Here’s what a few of our track and field athletes and coaches have said about the start of their season so far.
Starting off with Devin Davis, who is a junior here at Wayne Christian. He has been doing track for 2 years now. When asked what he loves about track he said “It’s fun, you get a lot of stamina and speed. My favorite part is the time you spend with friends.” Devin participates in the 400 meter dash and has a long-range goal of being able to go to college and play sports. Before he runs, his favorite food to snack on are Cinnamon Almond Butter Biscuits. Devin is a very talented athlete whether it comes to football, basketball, and of course, track and field.
Speaking of talented athletes we also were able to interview his teammate Tyrone Buskey who is a freshman here at Wayne Christian. When asked about his short-range and long-range goals in track he responded with, “My short range is to qualify for states this year and my long range is to run under 11 seconds in the 100 by senior year.” Tyrone participates in the 100 meter dash and has been running for our track and field team for 3 years. “My favorite part is the environment of the track meets and getting to meet new people.” Tyrone Buskey is a great teammate and shows great sportsmanship on the track field and the court.
We also interviewed everyone’s favorite coaches, Coach Brandon and Coach Williams! We asked them about their coaching experience as well as their
track experience. Here is what they each said.
Starting off with Coach Williams, the newest track and field coach. She helps with facilitating with the girls and long distance running. She has had experience with track in her high school years participating in throwing javelin and shooting puck. In practice, Coach Williams likes to focus on coaching her athletes on being able to run for a long period of time, not a set distance or time, and being able to push when tired. When asked about how she helps athletes who often get in their head she responded with this,“With running it’s definitely a mind over matter you have to be in the right mindset, I like to remind everybody that you can run for a long period of time as long as you set a good pace.” Coach Williams is an amazing coach and loves doing what she does.
Now last but not least, we interviewed Coach Brandon. He has been a track and field coach for a couple of years now and he works with sprinters and throwers. Although he never ran track in high school, he had a lot of running experience in the army. While coaching, his favorite things to work with athletes on during practice are sprinter starts, relay exchanges, and thrower mechanics. When asked how he wants to implement athletes out of track he responded with this, “How to model young adults, and to love and trust the Lord.” Coach Brandon cares about his athletes very much and loves coaching here at Wayne Christian School.
