When John speaks of wishes being fulfilled while you abide in the Lord, he speaks not of self gratifying wishes that come from our heart, but wishes that come out of a renewed mind that abides in Him and His word. He is speaking of a cherished relationship with God, that makes prayer effectual in the result of this relationship. What is described in John 15:7-9 is a beautiful representation of the fruit of a relationship with God. In the same sense, you could say that you effectively come to share desires with Him as you grow stronger in a relationship with Him.
In the previous context of John 15, the parable of the fruit and the vine was begun, and these verses carry into its context. And you can see it carry into this idea of a connected relationship providing fruit. When the verse states “Abide in Me (God),” it speaks to a continuously growing relationship with the Lord, a relationship that is often kept through prayer and focus. Our relationship with the Lord must be a steady reliance and communion with Him. A relationship of this steady dependence will grow vastly greater fruit. Such a relationship will most assuredly glorify the Lord as a result of this fruit. A relationship maintained should often lead you and others toward discipleship, fulfilling the great commission as a result of the reliance on His love. And in bearing this fruit, an abundant love, salvation, and fruit are born to glorify the Lord.
