Madeline Newberry, a 7th grader, makes small crafts, ranging from oyster shell ornaments to tobacco stick ornaments that can be painted into little snowmen. With the rise in popularity of her work, we asked her some questions about her and her work.
What kind of crafts do you make?
“I most often make oyster shell ornaments and tobacco stick ornaments.”
When did you start making crafts?
“I started last November for an event at church to raise money.”
What made you start to sell crafts?
“My Mom came up with an idea and thought it would be fun to sell at church and make money, and it was a success.”
What’s your favorite thing to make?
“My favorite thing to make is tobacco stick ornaments because I enjoy painting them, I also usually paint them as snowmen. I sell each ornament for $10.”
Madeline is very passionate about her work and should continue to be encouraged by others. It is always important to encourage people in their work to help them grow. Even if you’re passionate but not skilled, you can always hone your craft. The spark of creativity often goes out and dims without encouragement to become a flame. As a result, we should always encourage others’ talents and skills, because everyone has a talent, no matter how big or small.
