Every morning, thousands of teenagers have to drag themselves out of bed while it is still dark outside. Most of us are half asleep while we get ready for school, trying to wake ourselves up. I really think schools should start later in the day.Teenagers need more sleep than adults, but we are the ones who have to get up the earliest most of the time. Parents call us lazy and tell us we need to toughen up, but it’s not that at all. Our bodies just don’t work well that early. When school starts too soon, students end up tired, angry, and stressed out. If schools started later, students would get more rest, feel better, and do better in class. Schools always say they care about their students and want to see them succeed, but I feel like they should at least let us sleep a little longer if they did.
First of all, teenagers actually need a lot of sleep to stay healthy. Doctors say that kids our age should be getting nine to almost ten hours of sleep every night. But that’s hard to do when school starts so early. Most schools start around 7:30-8:00 am, which means students have to wake up at five or six in the morning to get ready for school. You may have to wake up even earlier if you take the bus. The problem is that teenagers’ sleep schedules change as we get older. Our bodies don’t start feeling tired until later at night like around 11 pm, even if we try to go to sleep earlier. That means, we end up getting less sleep just because of how our bodies work. I know from experience that when I don’t get enough sleep, I can’t focus in class. It causes me to forget things and not pay attention. Many other teenagers can agree with this article. When school starts too early, we spend the first part of the day just trying to wake up instead of learning. If school started later, we’d all come to class more awake and ready to learn.
Another big reason schools should start later is that it would help students’ mental and physical health. Being tired all the time can cause people to be sick, stressed, or even sad. When we don’t get enough sleep, it’s harder to deal with problems, and small things make us upset. A lot of students stay up super late doing homework or studying, then have to wake up early again. That kind of schedule can wear people out. If schools started later, students could get more rest, which would help them feel better and stay healthier. Teens who get enough sleep are also less likely to make bad decisions or get into accidents. Studies even show that when schools changed to later start times, there were fewer car crashes involving teen drivers. Sleep isn’t about feeling rested, but staying safe and healthy.
Also, starting school later would help students do better in their classes. When people get enough sleep, they can focus more and remember what they learned. Schools that already changed their start times saw grades and attendance go up. It makes sense when you’re not half asleep, you can pay attention and learn more. When students get enough sleep, they feel more positive and do better on tests and assignments. But when students are tired, they zone out, forget homework, and have no energy to do anything. Starting later can also make mornings easier at home. Parents wouldn’t have to rush their kids to get out of bed, and kids could have time to eat breakfast. Some people say that starting later would mess up sports and parents’ work schedules, but schools could make small changes to fix that. Schools could shorten passing times or make class a few minutes shorter. Student learning and staying healthy should be more important than sports schedules.
In conclusion, schools should start later in the day. Teenagers need enough sleep to stay focused, healthy, and happy. Early start times make that hard for students and it can cause a lot of problems. Students are stressed, tired, and are less ready to learn because their bodies aren’t getting the rest it needs. Changing school start times might take a lot of planning, but the results would be worth it. It would help students feel better, do great in school, and be safer on the road if you’re a student driver. Schools always say they want their students to succeed and be safe, and this is one of the easiest ways to make that happen. Sleep isn’t a task- it’s something we have to do so we can stay healthy and grow. If schools really want us to do our best, they should give us a little more time in the morning to get the sleep us and our bodies need. Even starting school one hour later could make a huge difference. Students would come to school more alert, more positive, and ready to learn. It’s time for all schools to wake up and realize that students need more sleep.
