There has been a lot of controversy this year surrounding UNC, making it into the tournament. Many believe that they do not deserve to be in the tournament this year because they are 1-12 in Quad 1 wins.
In college basketball, a “Quad 1 win” is a victory against a team ranked high in the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) rankings, with the specific thresholds varying based on whether the game is at home, neutral, or on the road. This means that they have lost 12 of the 13 Quad 1 games they have played this season. “The 2024-25 North Carolina Tar Heels have the worst Quad 1 record of any team to make the at-large field since the metric debuted in 2018-19.” This record led many to believe that UNC did not deserve to make the tournament at all. However, they made the play-in game, which means they had to beat San Diego State in order to play in the tournament. Many people doubted they would even beat them, but on Tuesday March 18, they beat San Diego State 95-68.
