On September 20th, we interviewed Mrs. Melissa Hughes, a high school math teacher. We asked her a few questions about her past teaching history. We asked what inspired her to be a teacher and her response was “Honestly I didn’t really know that I wanted to be a teacher until I actually stepped into it” she shared that she had somewhat prepared to teach while in college but she didn’t really know that she wanted to be a teacher until she became one. She said “I took some classes while in college to give it a chance just in case. It was like something to fall back on. So I took classes but then when I was hired by Lee Johnson I thought i’d give it a chance and see how it goes and I just fell in love with teenagers so once I started teaching and building those relationships I became addicted to it.” We then asked why did you choose to work at WCS and she shared, “I love being in a christian atmosphere and I love being able to share my faith freely but also live it comfortably. I love being able for when kids ask questions to always bring it back to the word and with the student you can really tell they are hungry for it.” She has been teaching for 18 years.
We asked her favorite part about teaching, “The relationships with my students and watching them even now, kids that I’ve taught 12 years ago I mean some are now going into the medical field like doctors and engineers I mean I love seeing what they do. And then some of them are going into the mission field which is amazing and I even have students that are now pastors. They really keep that relationship that you build with them.” We lastly asked what advice would she give to people looking to become a teacher, “I would say be open to all sorts of things as far as what you’re going to encounter, what you’re going to see, the conversations you’re going to have with students but you always have to look past those certain situations. You always have to see them as sons and daughters of Jesus and really love them through some hard circumstances. And train yourself to really love people”
