The Eagles felt the rush as they snapped Cary Christian’s undefeated streak, 21-12.
On Friday, October 18, the Varsity football team hosted the (formerly) undefeated Cary Christian Knights. The Eagles never let up their ground attack, scoring 3 rushing touchdowns and earning 357 yards. Strangely, WCS is the #3 ranked team in North Carolina after this game, with the #1 team being…Cary Christian. Someone should recount the votes.
The #2 team in North Carolina is who the Eagles will be facing next week, Arendell Parrott Academy. A win over Arendell should put WCS in the limelight to be the top team in the state. This will be the last game of the regular season for Varsity football. Then, it’s playoff time.
After the game, our nationally beloved reporter Jason Mirus interviewed player Gabe Willis.
How do you feel about how the game went?
We played well, we executed our gameplan. We outlasted them in terms of depth, and we just had more gas than them overall, ‘cause they gave up because of Coach Pugh’s gameplan. Just keep hitting them and they don’t want to play anymore, and that’s what we did.
Some areas of the game you played well in?
Defense. Defense played well. We only allowed 12 [points], and Cary averaged 60 [points] a game. So we shut them down.
Any areas you personally played well?
Me and Johnny (Johnathan Jackson) blocked down the middle. They didn’t make a single slant the whole game. They didn’t throw a single slant.
Any areas you felt could be improved?
The O-line needs some work, and that’s not a diss to them. We’ve tightened it up after halftime, but we had some issues in the first half.
Any players you want to shoutout?
Jeremiah Winders and Nate Peck. Jeremiah has run the ball, Nate had a good game. Two picks (interceptions), forced fumble, some running too.
How did your team celebrate the win?
See, Coach Pugh despises Cary. He does not like Cary. So, he was the first person to start celebrating in our postgame huddle because he does not like Cary at all.
How are you gonna prepare for next week’s game?
Definitely gonna be another defensive practice because [Arendell] Parrott’s defense I don’t think is as good as Cary’s. Parrott’s whole ideology is just out-score the other team. They don’t really care as much about defense, because they don’t have the talent that Cary does from what I’ve seen on film. So I think it’ll be another defensive side of practice because Parrott’s a very offensive-based team.
Any goals for next week?
Win the game. Become #1 in North Carolina because we’re still #3 behind Parrott and Cary. I have no idea why.
Thank you Gabe for the interview!
